Gray, Arthur.
Adm. pens. (age 17) at JESUS, Oct.

of William, Esq. B. [Sept. 28,
1852], at York. School, Blackheath Proprietary (Rev. J. Kempthorne). Matric.
Michs. 1870; B.A.
(Class. Trip., 1st Class) 1874; M.A. 1877. Fellow, 1875-1912. Master, 1912-40;

Dulwich College,
1874-7. Returned to the College, 1877; Senior Tutor and Vice-Master, 1895-1912.

in its library.
President, Cambridge Antiquarian Society, 1901-3. Served Cambridge as a most
careful historian, his
first study, The Priory of St Radegund, gaining much attention. Later
came his two
Histories of the University and of the town: 'the opening of the latter,
in which he proved ...
that the Roman settlement from which nearly all grew was on the Chesterton and
not on the
Grantchester reach of the river, was an impressive example of the originality
that runs all through
both books.' Chief amongst his other works are: History of Jesus College; Old
Plans of Cambridge;
A Chapter in the Early Life of Shakespeare
; and Tedious Brief Tales of
Granta and
Gramarye
