Michs. 1805; B.A. 1806. Adm. at the Middle Temple, Jan. 17, 1798. Entered the Army; Ensign in First Foot Guards, Dec. 25, 1805; Lieut. and Capt., Sept. 26, 1811. Described by Byron in a note to Don Juan, VIII. 18, as 'a very amiable and clever man, and his society in great request for his wit, gaiety and chansons à boire.' Killed in action at Quatre Bras, June 16, 1815; his name appears in Wellington's list of 'officers killed and missing, June 16,' but in the original Gazette as 'Grove,' a fact to which Byron made allusion in the above stanza. Appointed Judge of the King's Bench, and, as such, knighted, Feb. 9, 1787; resigned, Easter, 1813. Sentenced William Cobbett, in 1810. Married Miss Dennett, of the Isle of Wight.
