Irish Secretary, 1819-23. Vice-President of the Board of Trade, 1823-7. President of the Board of Trade and Treasurer of Navy, 1827-8. President of Board of Control, 1830-5. Colonial Secretary under Lord Melbourne, 1835-9. Became unpopular by his policy in Cape Colony and in Canada; resigned, 1839. Created Baron Glenelg, 1831. P.C. Health obliged him to live abroad latterly, and he died at Cannes, unmarried, Apr. 23, 1866, when the title became extinct. Brother of Robert (1795).
