In his youth had assisted his father in his business; first as a baker, at Nottingham, and afterwards as a miller at Sneinton, Notts., where he published privately the paper containing his famous theorem, On the application of Mathematical Analysis to the Theories of Electricity and Magnetism. Entered Caius under the guidance of Sir Edward ffrench Bromhead. Author, Papers on Vibrations of Pendulums in Fluid Media; On the Motion of Waves in a Variable Canal; On the Reflection and Refraction of Light at the Common Surface of two non-crystalline Media; On the Reflection and Refraction of Sound; On the Propagation of Light in Crystalline Media. His work on optics caused him to be regarded as the founder, after Newton, of the Cambridge School of mathematical physics. Described, by his contemporaries, as 'a mathematician who stood head and shoulders above all his companions in and outside the University.' His works were later edited by N. M. Ferrers (1847), Master of Caius. Died May 31, 1841, at Sneinton. Buried there. Father of the next. (Venn, II. 224; G.
