Gardiner or Gardner, William [Nelson]. Adm. sizar at EMMANUEL, June 30, 1793 (W. Gardiner). Of Dublin. Migrated to Corpus Christi, Nov. 11, 1795 (W. Gardner). [S. of John, 'crier and factotum' to Judge Scott, and Margaret Nelson, his wife, a pastry cook. B. June 22, 1766, at Dublin. Educated at Mr Sisson Darling's Academy.] Matric. 1796; Scholar, 1796; B.A. 1797. Before coming to Cambridge was attached to the suite of Sir James Nugent, of Donore, Westmeath; studied for three years at the Dublin Academy where he obtained a silver medal for drawing. Went to London and supported himself by portrait painting; exhibited [p.11] pictures at the Royal Academy, 1787, 1792 and 1793. Gave up painting for the stage. Became an engraver and worked abroad under Bartolozzi and others, but though very proficient, disliked the work and returned to Dublin. With the intention of taking Orders was adm. at Emmanuel, 1793, but finding that, as an Irishman, he had no chance of obtaining a Fellowship there, migrated to Corpus Christi. Being still unable to obtain a Fellowship, he returned to London and again took up portrait painting. Married Miss Seckerson, and with her help set up as a bookseller and publisher in Pall Mall; his eyesight failed, and his wife and child having died, he became eccentric in dress and behaviour. Referred to under the name of Mustapha in Dibdin's Bibliomania. Illustrated Shakespeare, Dryden's Fables, Memories of Grammont, etc. Committed suicide, May 8, 1814, 'in consequence of unbearable misery.' See the biography he left, printed in G.
