M.P. for Weymouth and Melcombe Regis, 1826, 1830 and 1831. Purchased large estates in the Hebrides, including the islands of Barra, Benbecula and South Uist. The island purchases were the source of much trouble and of fierce controversy. Resided a great deal at Kinsteary, where he carried out great improvements. 'Achieved the distinction of being the richest commoner in the northern part of the Kingdom.' Died July 16, 1858, at Edinburgh.
