Paid many visits to the Vaudois, and in 1824 published a Narrative of an Excursion to the Mountains of Piedmont and Researches among the Vaudois (or Waldenses), which aroused much sympathy in England for the inhabitants; a subscription was started for their relief, part of which was used for a College and library at La Tour in Piedmont. In 1841 he wrote The Peasantry of the Border, an appeal on their behalf, with the object of bettering the condition and housing of the agricultural labourers in North Northumberland. Other works include The Spirit of the Gospel; More Waldensian Researches; A Memoir of Felix Neff, pastor of the High Alps; Our Protestant Forefathers, etc. Died Sept. 10, 1855, at Norham.
