Educated at University College, London, and at St Andrews University. Matric. Michs. 1883; B.A. and LL.B. 1886; M.A. 1893. Called to the Bar, Inner Temple, June 10, 1891. Conveyancer, but never practised. Had a profound knowledge of English literature of the 18th and early 19th centuries. Published in the Temple Classics an edition of Boswell's Journal of a Tour in the Hebrides and Life of Johnson, and, with A. R. Waller, Hazlitt's Complete Works. At his death had in preparation a complete edition of the Works of Beaumont and Fletcher for the University Press. His abundant Notes to these works contain much valuable information. A prominent member of the Saville Club. 'A man of wide culture, broad sympathies, and remarkable sweetness of disposition and charm of manner.'
