Gilmour, Sir Alexander, Bart. Adm. Fell.-Com. (age 16) at ST JOHN'S, Nov. 16, 1753. [Only] s. of Sir Charles [2nd Bart., and Jean, dau. of Sir Robert Sinclair], of Craigmiller, Midlothian, Scotland. [B. 1735.] Matric. Michs. 1753. Succeeded to the baronetcy, Aug. 9, 1750. Claimed unsuccessfully the estate of Balnagowan, on the death of his cousin, William Ross, 14th and last Lord Ross of Halkhead, 1754. An officer in the 1st Foot Guards. Went to France with his regiment, and was wounded and taken prisoner there, Sept. 1758. (G. Mag., 1758, 501, has a note, 'Oct. 11, 1758. Lord Frederick Cavendish and Sir Charles (sic) Gilmore, bart., arrived at Court on their paroles of honour, to settle the exchange of prisoners.') M.P. for Co. of Edinburgh in three parliaments, 1761-6, 1766-8 and 1768-74. Clerk of the Green Cloth, 1765. (G. Mag. states that he 'married at a very early age and has left at least one son,' which appears to be incorrect.) Lived in France for many years, most of them at Boulogne, owing to pecuniary embarrassments. Died s.p.
