Gell, William. Adm. pens. at EMMANUEL, Oct. 6, 1793. Of Derbyshire. [2nd] s. of Philip, Esq., of Hopton [and Dorothy, dau. of William Milnes. His paternal grandfather, John Eyre, had assumed the name of Gell from his mother's family, the Gells of Hopton]. B. there Apr. 1, 1778. School, Derby. Matric. Michs. 1793; B.A. 1798; M.A. 1804. Fellow, 1798. Migrated to Jesus, Apr. 25, 1804. Traveller and archaeologist. Visited the Troad, 1801, and fixed the site of Troy at Bournabashi. His Topography of Troy (published 1804) is referred to in Byron's English Bards, where the author is styled 'Classic Gell' (altered later to 'rapid Gell'). Knighted, May 14, 1803, on returning from a mission to the Ionian Islands. Went again to Greece with Edward Dodwell, and accompanied Princess Caroline (afterwards Queen Caroline) to Italy, as chamberlain; gave evidence in her favour at her trial, Oct. 6, 1820. After 1820 lived in Italy, having villas at Rome and at Naples. Frequently visited at Naples by Sir Walter Scott. F.S.A.; F.R.S., 1807. Author, Pompeiana; Topography of Rome. Died unmarried Feb. 4, 1836, at Naples. Buried there in the English burial ground. Bequeathed his drawings to the British Museum. (Derby Sch.
