Gough, Richard. Adm. Fell.-Com. at CORPUS CHRISTI, July 24, 1753. Of London. [S. and h. of Harry, Esq., of Perry Hall, Staffs., and Elizabeth, dau. of Morgan Hynde, brewer, of London. B. Oct. 21, 1735, in Winchester Street, London. Private tuition.] A rigid Presbyterian; his relatives petitioned Dr John Barnardiston, Master of the College, 'not to suffer him to be matriculated, by which he avoided taking the oaths.' He was 'very shy and awkward and much the joke of his fellow-collegians and hardly ever stirred out of college but with his tutor.' At the University his studies were 'regular and severe,' and the numerous works which he compiled and translated at this period are still extant in MSS. Left Cambridge in July, 1756, and for 20 years travelled through England, often accompanied by John Nichols, the printer. In 1774 came into possession of the family mansion at Enfield, Middlesex, and of extensive landed estates. Married, Aug. 18, 1774, Anne, dau. of Thomas Hall, Esq., of Goldings, Herts. F.S.A., 1767; Director of the Society, 1771-97. F.R.S., 1775. Author of about 20 works, including British Topography, 1768 and 1780; Sepulchral Monuments of Great Britain, 1786, 1796, 1799; an edition of Camden's Britannia, 1789; a translation of the Arabian Nights, 1798; several topographical and numismatic monographs. A regular correspondent of the Gentleman's Magazine from 1767 onwards, under the signature of 'D. H.', and in 1786 became leading reviewer of the magazine. 'As he had been a member of Corpus Christi College...it might have been anticipated that his magnificent and unique library would have come to his own University. But there is reason to believe that his career was not a happy one. He left without a degree. The collection had been designed as a gift to the nation. It was offered by its owner under certain restrictions to the British Museum, and was refused. Under these circumstances Gough left the whole to the Bodleian Library.' Died Feb. 20, 1809.
