Gibbs, Vicary. Adm. (age 18) at KING'S, a scholar from Eton, May 4, 1771. [2nd s. of George Abraham, Esq., surgeon, of Exeter, and Ann, dau. of Antony Vicary, of Exeter. B. Oct. 27, 1751, in the Cathedral Close, Exeter. School, Eton.] Matric. Michs. 1771; Craven Scholar, 1772; B.A. 1775; M.A. 1778. Fellow. 1774-84. Adm. at Lincoln's Inn, Aug. 24, 1769. Called to the Bar, Feb. 1783. Joined the Western Circuit. Practised for some years as a Special Pleader and obtained a large connection. Assisted Erskine in defence of Thomas Hardy and Horne Tooke, 1794, and was congratulated by the Attorney-General. Bencher, 1795. Treasurer of Lincoln's Inn, 1805. Recorder of Bristol, 1794-1817. A skilful pleader and an astute lawyer, but uncivil and very outspoken to his clients; his manner was so caustic that he was known as 'Vinegar Gibbs.' Of Hayes, Kent. Married, July 8, 1784, Frances Cerjet, dau. of Major William Mackenzie, and had issue, a daughter. Died Feb. 8, 1820. Buried in the family vault at Hayes. M.I. there. (D.N.B.; Eton Coll.
