Fitzgerald (formerly Purcell), John. Adm. pens. (age 19) at TRINITY, July 6, 1820. S. [and h.] of John Purcell (assumed the surname Fitzgerald in 1818). B. 1803, at Bredfield, Suffolk. Resumed, by Royal Licence, the additional surname and arms of Purcell, Jan. 1858. In youth had suffered from brain-fever which had had the effect of so weakening his sight, that it became impossible for him, as had been intended, to take Orders in the Church of England. In evangelical circles he was valued as an eloquent and earnest preacher, but eccentric. 'John,' said his brother, 'means well, but he adopts extraordinary methods to attain his ends' (R. B. Ince, Some Cambridge Wits, 42-3). He weighed 18 stone, and devised a method 'by which it is probable that all the world will be made good.'
