Forbes, George. Adm. pens. at CHRIST'S, June 6, 1867. [2nd] s. of Professor James David [F.R.S., afterwards Principal of St Andrews University]. B. [Apr. 5, 1849], at Edinburgh. [School, Edinburgh Academy.] Previously at University of St Andrews. Matric. Michs. 1867. Migrated to St Catharine's, Jan. 29, 1870; B.A. 1871; M.A. 1874. Professor of Natural Philosophy at Anderson's College, Glasgow, 1872-80. Took up electrical engineering; associated for a short time with British Electric Light Co. Worked to improve the dynamo; one of his machines exhibited at Philadelphia Electrical Exhibition, 1884. His scheme for the harnessing of Niagara was formally considered by the International Niagara Commission, 1890. Consulting Engineer to the Cataract Construction Company, 1892. Employed by the Egyptian Government in surveying the cataracts of the Nile, 1897-8. Suggested to Kitchener the use of electric locomotives on the railway across the Nubian Desert. Subsequently turned his attention to range-finders, an instrument of his design being used in the South African War. Went to Hawaii to observe the transit of Venus, 1874. During the Russo-Turkish War, acted as special correspondent for The Times, 1877. F.R.S.E., F.R.A.S., M.I.C.E. Received the Russian Order of St George and the French Legion of Honour. Author, Lectures on Electricity; The Transit of Venus; Alternating and Interrupted Currents; The Theory of the Glaciers of Savoy; A History of Astronomy, etc. Lived latterly at Worthing.
