School, Inverary (his father) and Glasgow University; M.A., Glasgow, 1778. A private tutor for three years. C. of Claybrooke, Leics., 1781-9. R. of Frolesworth, 1789-90. Travelled abroad, 1790-6, writing an account of his journeys for the Gentleman's Magazine; visited the Court of the Duke of Brunswick and gave English lessons to his daughter, afterwards Queen Caroline. V. of Rothley, Leics., 1796-1819. Married the daughter of John Heyrick, town clerk of Leicester. Author, Sermons and Essays and The History of Claybrooke. For many years engaged on a life of Melanchthon, but did not send it to press. Died of apoplexy, Feb. 24, 1819. Father of John H. (1817), Kenneth (1831) and Samuel H.
