Youngest s. of George, Judge Advocate, and solicitor, of Plymouth, and Mary, dau. of Samuel Pierce, of Exeter. B. there Nov. 17, 1793. Schools, Plympton Grammar and Charterhouse. Studied art in London under Benjamin Haydon. Painted in Rome, 1816-30; in Greece, 1817; in London, 1830-50. His pictures, 'Pilgrims in Sight of Rome' and 'Byron's Dream' first made his name in England. A.R.A.; Librarian, 1842-4; President, 1850-65. F.R.S., 1838. Keeper of National Gallery, 1843-7; Director, 1855-65 (when the Trustees bought his library for £2100). Knighted, Nov. 13, 1850. Refused many public appointments, but consented to Sir Robert Peel's request to act as Secretary to the Fine Arts Commission for decorating the Houses of Parliament. Commissioner for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Hon. D.C.L., Oxford. Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Married, Apr. 9, 1849, Elizabeth, dau. of Dr Edward Rigby, of Norwich, authoress (for whom see D.N.B.), who wrote a Memoir prefixed to the 2nd edition of his Contribution to the Literature of the Fine Arts. Author, Materials for a history of oil painting, 1847-69. Amongst his famous pictures are 'Hagar and Ishmael'; 'A Peasant Woman bitten by a Serpent'; 'Escape of Francesco Carrara'; 'The Saviour blessing Little Children'; 'His weeping over Jerusalem' 'The Sisters.' Died Dec. 14, 1865, at Pisa. Buried at Florence, but re-interred by desire of the Royal Academy, at Kensal Green, Jan. 18, 1866.
