The mesmeric séances held at his house were largely attended by fashionable society, the results being regarded as miraculous; these exhibitions, however, caused friction with the Medical Council of University College, and be resigned his Fellowship in Dec. 1838, but continued to practise Mesmerism at his own house. Very eccentric in his dress; in 1826 he discarded knee breeches and silk stockings, which were then the orthodox dress of physicians. Author, The Principles and Practice of Medicine; Treatise on Human Physiology; translated Blumenbach's Physiology. Established The Zoist, a journal of cerebral physiology and mesmerism, 1844.
