His health broke down in 1847, and after residing in the south of France returned to England a complete invalid.
Resided at Anstey Hall, Trumpington, near Cambridge, from 1853.
Gradually lost his sight, but continued to dictate memoirs on mathematical and other subjects, until within a short time of his death.
Died unmarried May 12, 1859, aged 41.
Buried at Trumpington.
