Egan, Thomas Selby. Adm. pens. (age 18) at CAIUS, June 29, 1833. S. of John, of London. B. there [1814 or 1815]. Matric. Michs. 1833; B.A. 1839; M.A. 1842, Incorp. at Oxford, June 10, 1852. Rowing 'blue' (cox) 1836, 1839, 1840. Well known in his college days as an aquatic 'coach'; in 1852 trained the (winning) Oxford crew, the Cambridge crew in 1854 and 1858, and both crews in 1856; elected President of the C.U.B.C., 1853-4. The 'Tom Egan' life-boat stationed at Tramore was presented to the Institution by the C.U.B.C. in memory of him. Editor for many years of Bell's Life; translated Don Carlos, Infant of Spain, from the German of Schiller; Heine's Börne, and other poems. Died May 11, 1893, at Margate.
