Lord Byron was one of his pupils, and in Moore's Life of Byron are to be found several affectionate letters to him from the poet. Ord. deacon (Ely) Mar. 9, 1811. R. of Fingest, Bucks., 1820-41. Married, 1808, Caroline, dau. of A. W. Taylor (or Tayler) (1777), of Boreham Wood, Herts. Had a great reputation as a classical scholar. Edited Selections from the Classics for Harrow. Formed a valuable library of the Greek classics, which he sold in 1827 (2 parts) for £8917 and in 1837 a third part for £1837. Noted for the charm of his conversation. An original member of the Roxburghe Club in London, and contributed to their collection in 1817 and 1824. Died Mar. 5, 1841, at Harrow. Father of Henry (1831) and Benjamin H.
