Pattenden). Did not reside. Migrated to Peterhouse, Oct. 15, 1860; Scholar, 1860; B.A. (14th Classic) 1864; M.A. 1867. Fellow of Peterhouse, 1864; held various College offices. Assistant Master at Clifton College, 1868-78. Head Master (the first appointment) of Bath College, 1878-97. Made the School famous through his own reputation as a teacher and the brilliant achievements of his pupils (notably, Herbert Warren, President of Magdalen College, Oxford, and J. A. Spender, the well-known journalist and author). A man of remarkable character; the embodiment of disinterestedness and uprightness. 'His interests branched out in all directions and his teaching was an endless debate with his pupils on history, religion, philosophy, politics....' Lived latterly at Milton, Cambs.
