On his return read a paper on Kuldja before the Geographical Society and commenced a work on Russia, one or two chapters of which appeared in the Fortnightly Review, but was never published.
Bought the Weekly Dispatch for £14,000 in Jan. 1875, and edited it till his death.
M.P. for Newcastle-on-Tyne, 1880-3; seemed likely to play an important part in politics, but his health gave way, and he resigned his seat.
