Dodwell, Edward.

Had private means and adopted no profession.
Travelled in Greece, 1801, and again in 1805 and 1806.
Obtained many objects in tombs opened by him in Attica and the well-known 'Dodwell vase' (with a representation of a boar-hunt in its cover) from a Jew in Corinth, having been allowed leave of absence to travel by the government of Bonaparte, in whose hands he was a prisoner.
From 1806 lived chiefly at Naples and Rome.
Married Theresa, dau. of Count Giraud, and 30 years his junior.
Author, amongst other important archaeological works, of A Classical Tour, describing his travels.
Died May 13, 1832, at Rome from the effects of an illness contracted in 1830 when he was exploring the Sabine Mountains.
