Lost the sight of one eye early in infancy. Student at Lincoln's Inn, 1827. Professor of Mathematics at London University, 1828-31, when he resigned. F.R.A.S., 1828; Member of Council, 1830-61; Hon. Sec., 1831-8 and 1848-54. Professor of Mathematics, University College, London, 1836-66, when he resigned, regarding the refusal of [p.276] the Council of the College to elect James Martineau to the Chair of Mental Philosophy and Logic as a piece of religious intolerance. First President of the Mathematical Society, 1864. A follower of Berkeley. Granted Civil List pension of £100, in 1870. He loved town life and had a humorous detestation of trees, fields and birds. Addicted to puns and all ingenious puzzles and paradoxes, and a skilful flute player. Advocated the adoption of a decimal coinage. Possessed of prodigious energy, which was chiefly absorbed by his voluminous writings upon mathematical, philosophical and antiquarian subjects. His library of about 3000 volumes, enriched with quaint marginal notes and learned annotations, was bought after his death by Lord Overstone and presented to the University of London. Married Sophia Elizabeth, dau. of William Freud, V. of Madingley, Cambs. who was deeply interested in, and published books concerning psychical matters.
