Cranmer, Thomas.
Adm. at JESUS, c. 1503. S. of Thomas,
of Aslacton, Notts. B. there, July 2, 1489. B.A. 1511-2;
M.A. 1515; B.D. 1521; D.D. 1526. Fellow, 1512. University
preacher, 1526. He lost his fellowship by reason of marriage;
but was re-elected on the death of his wife a year later.
Archdeacon of Taunton, c. 1529. In 1530 he went to Bologna
and to Rome on the matter of the Royal Divorce; and in
1531 to the Emperor Charles V; when he married a niece of
Osiander. Archbishop of Canterbury, 1533. Supporter of
the policy of Henry VIII. On the death of Edward VI he
supported the claims of Lady Jane Grey. Convicted of
treason and deprived, Nov. 1553. Committed to the Tower.
Tried for heresy at Oxford, 1555. Burnt there, Mar. 21,
