CLOUGH, ANNE JEMIMA: b . 20 Jan. 1820 at Liverpool, dau . of James Butler Clough, cotton merchant in Liverpool and Charleston, S. Carolina ( d. 1844), and Anne Perfect of Pontefract, Yorks ( d . 1860); sis . of Arthur Hugh Clough, poet, and aunt of B.A. Clough ( q.v. ). *e Educ. at home, studied much by herself. *c In 1837 began teaching and visiting girls of Welsh Nat. Sch. in Liverpool founded by J.B. Clough and others; started and conducted her own small school 1841-46. Attended lectures at tchrs' co ll. in London 1847; moved to Ambleside and established sch. there, some chn. boarding with her and her mother, 1852-61. Moved to Combe Hurst, nr Wimbledon living with Mrs. A.H. Clough in home of latter's parents; met various leaders of women 's educ. movements. Organised local Schoolmistresses' Assoc. in Liverpool 1865; submitted memorandum to Schs Enquiry Commn 1866 based on her own experience. Sec. to Liverpool Educ. Soc. 1867-70; helped to form N. of Eng. Soc. for Promoting Hr Educ. of Women 1867 and orga nised its lectures in Liverpool for 4 years. In 1870 H. Sidgwick started scheme of lectures for women in Cambridge, set up house for residence of women coming from outside Cambridge and invited A.J. Clough to take charge; residence at 74 Regent St 1871-72, at Merton Hall 1872-74, with annexe in Trumpington St 1873-75, in Bateman St 1874-75. Newnham Hall, later called North Hall, now Old Hall, opened in 1875. A.J.C. in charge and remained Principal of Newnham College until her death in 1892, moving to Cloug h Hall when it was ready for occupation in 1888; acted as Tutor, Dir. of Studies, Coll. Sec., housekeeper and chaperone, planned College garden and helped to plan and supervise new bldgs as they were added. Helped to found Univ. Assoc. Women Tchrs 1882 (Pr es. 1882-92), Assoc. of A.M.s 1884, and Camb. Tr. Coll. for Women 1886. Became recognised authority on women's educ.; consulted by founders of Somerville Coll., Oxford 1879, of Radcliffe Coll. Boston, U.S.A. 1884, of P.N.E.U. 1887. Instigated playing of hoc key in Newnham 1891. Not fundamentally a scholar, she valued education as preparation for life; she was characterised by her wisdom, humility and kindness, her persistence in face of difficulties and her abounding interest in individuals.
