Bowes, John Bowes. Adm. pens. (age 17) at TRINITY, Feb. 4, 1828. S. [natural son] of John [Earl of Strathmore (1784), for whom see Bowes-Lyon]. B. June 19, 1811, at Streatlam Castle, Durham. School, Eton. Matric. Michs. 1828; B.A. 1832. Of Streatlam Castle. Sheriff of Durham, 1854. M.P. for South Durham, 1832-47. Claimed his father's peerage but his claim disallowed, the suit ending in favour of his uncle, Thomas (1792). One of the oldest members of the Jockey Club; 'the luckiest man on the turf' and one of the best judges of yearlings. Erected at Barnard Castle the 'Josephine and John Bowes Museum' and park, at a cost of £80,000, in memory of his first wife, and gave art treasures to the museum.
