Elected by the influence of Lord Sandwich; this patron afterwards obtained for him a commissionership at Greenwich Hospital, and later a place at the Admiralty 'of about £100 p.a., he being a good performer on the violin' (Cole). Always in difficulties owing to his extravagance. Married Miss Thornhill, described as 'improvident and proud.'
