On his arrival in Australia, Sept. 13, 1829, faced a difficult situation with great courage and determination, and set himself to win Governmental and popular support for his endeavour to build and endow churches and schools throughout the country.
Returned to England to make a personal appeal for funds and succeeded in raising £13,000, chiefly through the S.P.G. and the S.P.C.K. Consecrated Bishop of Australia at Lambeth, 1836 [the first, and only, Bishop of Australia, for, on the subsequent subdivision of the vast diocese, and the erection of the Sees of Melbourne and Newcastle, Sydney became a Metropolitan See. The centenary of his consecration was celebrated in a service held in Canterbury Cathedral and broadcast to the Empire, June 5, 1936]. Bishop of Sydney and Metropolitan of Australasia, 1847-53.
Founded Australia's first grammar school at Parramatta; also instrumental in establishing a grammar school in Sydney.
Successfully opposed the Government's decision against all denominational instruction in schools.
