Assistant Master at Perse School, Cambridge, for four years; subsequently at Heath School, Halifax, and Queen Elizabeth's College, Guernsey. Secretary of the Royal Society of Painter Etchers, 1898-1901. Lecturer at the London School of Economics, 1905. Educationist and agriculturist. Lectured in France, Germany and America. Wrote on French rural, secondary and physical education. Officier de l'Instruction Publique; Chevalier of the Legion of Honour. Occasional Inspector under the Board of Education; did much to improve the teaching of modern languages. Of Briningham House, Norfolk; took over the farm there and devoted himself to the problem of home food production. A member of the Permanent International Committee of the Congress for Moral Education. A frequent correspondent of The Times and the Educational Supplement. Married and had issue. Author, educational; Who is Responsible? Armageddon and After; translated two of Bergson's works; also published a volume of poems. Died July 11, 1937, aged 73, at Briningham House.
