Succeeded his great-uncle, Sir Merrik Burrell, as 2nd Bart., Apr. 6, 1787. Created Baron Gwydir, of Gwydir, Co. Carnarvon, June 16, 1796 [a good example of a 'Petticoat Peerage,' the title being taken from part of his wife's estates, in right of her greatgrandmother]. Presided over the trial of Warren Hastings, as deputy Great Chamberlain (this hereditary office, being vested in his wife and her sister). P.C., 1820. Married Priscilla Barbara Elizabeth, dau. of Peregrine (Bertie), Duke of Ancaster and Kesteven, Feb. 23, 1779 (which Priscilla, on the death of her brother, the 4th Duke, was declared suo jure Baroness Willoughby de Eresby, Mar. 18, 1780.
