Browne Medal (Greek and Latin epigrams) 1809. Left without taking a degree owing to religious scruples. Lived at Dr Parr's vicarage of Hatton, Warws., 1810-15. Settled at Thetford, Norfolk, and devoted himself to literary work. Incurred heavy financial losses owing to a lawsuit undertaken to prove his father's legitimacy, and a subsequent unsuccessful endeavour to establish his claim to the family estates of Potternewton. Suffered imprisonment in the Fleet Prison for some years. Edited many editions of Greek and Latin authors. Compiled with Professor Dunbar, of Edinburgh, a Greek and English lexicon. Undertook the reprinting of Henry Stephens' Thesaurus Graecae Linguae; finished this enormous work of twelve folio volumes in 1826; severely reviewed by C. J. Blomfield (afterwards Bishop of London).
