tenure he was involved in incessant disputes with the
fellows. Regius Professor of Divinity, 1717-42. In 1718 the
University deprived him of his degrees: they were restored in
1724. He died July 14, 1742, and was buried in the College
Chapel. Famous as the greatest of English critical scholars.
Best known by his Dissertations on the Epistles of Phalaris .
