Went to London; a member of the literary circle which included Hunt, Lamb and Hazlitt. Took up journalism; assisted Leigh Hunt in the Reflector and Examiner newspapers. Theatrical critic to The Times; on the parliamentary staff of The Times, 1811-; editor and co-proprietor of The Times, 1817-41. Dramatic critic to The Examiner. The Thomas Barnes scholarship was founded in his memory by his brother John, of the Middle Temple. Author, Parliamentary Portraits, etc. Died May 7, 1841. Buried at Kensal Green.
