Bale, John. B.D. 1528-9. S. of Henry, of Cove, Suffolk. B. Nov. 21, 1495. Educated at the Carmelite monastery at Norwich, and afterwards at JESUS College. Embraced Reformation principles and caused scandal by his marriage. In 1540 he fied to Germany with his family. Returned in 1547. V. of Thorndon, Suffolk. R. of Bishopstoke, Hants. V. of Swaffham, Norfolk, 1551. Bishop of Ossory, 1552-3. Again a fugitive during the reign of Mary. Returned 1558, and was made Canon of Canterbury, 1560. Died there in 1563. Author, in early life, of several plays. Known later as a learned and bitter protestant controversial writer.
