Exhibitioner, 1879; Scholar, 1881; B.A. 1882; Tyrwhitt Hebrew Scholar, 1882; M.A. 1885; Litt.D. 1891; D.Lit. (Oxford) and Durham. The eminent Assyriologist and Egyptologist. Assistant to the Egyptian and Assyrian Department of the British Museum; Keeper of this Department, 1893-1924. Distinguished for his remarkable diversity of linguistic knowledge (Assyrian, Hebrew, Syriac, Ethiopic, Egyptian and Coptic, besides spoken Arabic). Conducted excavations at Aswân in Egypt, at Gebel, on the Island of Meroe, at Semna, and other sites in the Soudan, and at Nineveh and Dêr in Mesopotamia. Published the cuniform records of Esarhaddon, 1881. Edited The Book of the Dead, 1901. The Mummy was one of the best known of his Egyptian works. F.S.A. Knighted, 1920. A scholar of original personality and a genial raconteur, who was 'known to have kept a company at dinner spell-bound till dawn with tales of his experiences.' His publications include Memoir to Dr Birch; A History of Egypt from the end of the dynastic period to the death of Cleopatra VII (8 vols.); The Egyptian Soudan, its History and Monuments; The Book of the Kings of Egypt; Liturgy of Funeral Offerings; Rise and Progress of Assyriology; also a great number of Syriac, Coptic, Egyptian and other texts, grammars, transcriptions, treatises, guides, etc. Left property to the Master and Fellows of Christ's for founding and endowing a 'Lady Wallis Budge' Scholarship, Fellowship or Lectureship in Egyptology. Resided latterly at 48, Bloomsbury Street, W.C. Died Nov. 23, 1934, aged 77.
