Chinese Secretary of Legation at Peking, 1879-86. A detailed account of a journey in the interior of China was printed in the Supplementary Papers of the Royal Geographical Society in 1886, under the title Travels and Researches in Western China. Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, 1883. F.R.G.S. Consul-General in Korea, 1885-6. Political resident at Bhamò. Died unmarried June 16, 1890, aged 47, at Bhamò.
