A skilled mechanician, who conceived the idea of calculating numerical tables by machinery; devoted 37 years (and a large share of his fortune) to the invention and perfection of a calculating machine based on 'the method of differences'; obtained a government grant but was refused further aid for an improved design on the ground of expense. One of the founders of the Astronomical Society, 1820; Secretary, 1820-4; later, successively Vice-President, foreign Secretary, and a Member of the Council. Associated with the starting of the British Association, 1831; one of the trustees, 1832-8; originator of the Statistical Section, at the Cambridge Meeting, 1833. Principal founder of the [Royal] Statistical Society of London, 1834. Attended the meeting of Naturförscher at Berlin, 1828; and the Scientific Congress at Turin, 1840.
