Alesius, Alexander, alias Aless and Alane. Born in Edinburgh, Apr. 23, 1500. Graduated at St Andrews. An early reformer. Imprisoned at St Andrews, but escaped to Wittenberg, 1533, where he made the friendship of Luther and Melancthon. Invited to England by Cranmer, 1535. For a time appointed by the King to lecture at Cambridge; where he was a member of QUEENS' College. Afterwards in London. Returned about 1540 to Germany. Died at Leipsic, Mar. 17, 1565-6.
