Michs. 1896; B.A. 1899; B.C. 1903; M.B. and M.A. 1904; M.D. 1910. At Guy's Hospital, London. Research student at Cambridge. Thruston Medal, 1911. At Downing Research Laboratory; carried on valuable researches upon problems connected with metabolism. Served in the Great War (R.A.M.C., 1915; 6th Royal Berks. Regt.; Capt., 1916; M.C., 1916; V.C., 1917, 'for most conspicuous bravery'). Rendered valiant service during the fighting in Delville Wood, July, 1916; and later in the fighting around the Menin Road, near Ypres, July 31, 1917. Of this latter occasion Capt. Nichols wrote: 'In all that hellish turmoil, there had been one quiet figure most heroic, most wonderful of all: Dr Ackroyd, the 6th Berks. medical officer, a stooping, grey-haired, bespectacled man rose to the supremest heights; he seemed to be everywhere...no wounded man was treated hurriedly or unskilfully; he worked as stoically as if he were in the quiet of an operating Theatre.'
