Engaged in the Martin Mar-prelate controversy during which he was closely associated with John Lyly and Robert Greene.
Maintained a bitter controversy with Gabriel Harvey until both authors were ordered by the licensers of the press to desist, 1599 .
His original personality gives him a unique place in Elizabethan literature.
