1796. Fellow, 1794. College Librarian, in which capacity he made a copy (now
in Library) of Wm. Heberden's lectures on poisons delivered in 1749. Adm. at
Gray's Inn, Jan. 14, 1790. Called to the Bar, 1802; retired, 1809. Deputy High
Steward of the University, 1806-24; Commissary, 1814-24. F.R.S., 1804. A great
admirer of Fox, and a keen supporter of the Anti-slave trade movement. Hon.
Secretary of the African Association, and of the Royal Institution. An auditor
of the Life Assurance Office. Married, c. 1811, his cousin Lydia, dau.
of George Harrison, and widow of Richard Shepley, Esq., of Carshalton, Surrey.
Resided at Streatham Park, Surrey. J.P., and Chairman of the Surrey Adjourned
Quarter Sessions. Won a high reputation for his integrity and quick insight. A
Memoir published by J. Hatchard and Son, in 1825, describes him as 'the
intrepid enemy of everything unfair, deceitful or dishonest.' Died Mar. 21,
1824. (Sedbergh Sch. Reg., which gives 'died in 1809'; F. G.
Plaistowe.)
