Haeckel, Ernst Heinrich. Hon. Sc.D. 1898. B. Feb. 16, 1834, at Potsdam. Studied at Würzburg, Berlin and Vienna. Professor of Zoology, and director of the Zoological Institute at Jena. The first German biologist to give a wholehearted adherence to the doctrine of organic evolution. Darwin believed that his support was the chief factor of the success of the doctrine in Germany. His work culminated in the paper read before the fourth International Zoological Congress, held at Cambridge in 1898. Stated his application of evolution to philosophy in his Riddle of the Universe, 1899-1900, denying the immortality of the soul, the freedom of the will, and the existence of a personal God.
