Travelled in Syria and Egypt, 1844, and explored Damaraland. Gold Medal of the Royal Geographical Society, 1853. F.R.G.S., 1850. Member of the Managing Committee of Kew Observatory. Initiated Meteorographica, 1863, thus originating the system of weather forecasting subsequently in general operation. General Secretary of the British Association, 1863-7; four times Sectional President. F.R.S., 1856. Began researches into the laws of heredity, 1865, becoming founder of the School of 'Eugenics'. A by- product of these investigations was the discovery of the importance, for purposes of identification, of finger-prints. Initiated an anthropometric laboratory at the International Health Exhibition, 1884-5. Founded the Eugenic Laboratory, 1904, and the quarterly journal, Biometrika, 1901. Knighted, June 26, 1909. Hon. D.C.L. (Oxford) 1894. Married, Aug. 1, 1853, Louisa Jane, dau. of George Butler, Dean of Peterborough. An excellent conversationalist with a keen sense of humour. Jan. 17, 1911, at Grayshott House, Haslemere, Surrey. Left £45,000 for the foundation of a Chair of Eugenics at London University.
