Lord High Treasurer, 1572-98. Chancellor of the University of Dublin, 1592. Illustrious as a statesman, his life for forty years was a part of the history of England. As Chancellor of the University he was incessantly invoked. He married (i) Mary, dau. of Peter Cheke, the Esquire Bedell. This was in 1541, and was the cause of his removal from Cambridge; (ii) Mildred, dau. of Sir Anthony Cooke, of Gidea Hall, Essex, Dec. 21, 1545. Died, at his house in the Strand, Aug. 4, 1598.
