Of Longleat, where he employed 'Capability' Brown to improve the Gardens. Lord of the Bedchamber to George III, 1760-5. Viceroy of Ireland , 1765 (but never set foot in Ireland ), P.C., 1765. Described by Walpole as 'an inconsiderable debauched young man attached to the Bedfordshire .' Greatly favoured by the King. Secretary of the Northern Department, 1768; transferred to the Southern Department, 1768-70; resigned in 1770, but re-appointed Secretary of State for the Southern Department, 1775-9.
