Although supported by 25 other counties, and gaining the sympathy of Pitt and Charles Fox, its manifesto was too extravagant to succeed.
Opposed the war with France and advocated universal toleration of religion.
Married (1) Oct. 1, 1773, his cousin, Elizabeth, heiress of Sir Marmaduke Wyvill, 6th Bart. (no surv. issue); (2) Aug. 9, 1787, Sarah, dau. of J. Codling, and had issue.
Died Mar. 8, 1822, aged 82, at his seat, Burton Hall, near Bedale; buried at Spennithorne.
