Best known as Eliott Warburton, writer of biographies, historical novels, etc. Travelled in Syria , Palestine and Egypt , 1843, describing his experiences in The Crescent and the Cross or Romance and Realities of Eastern Travel (1844-5), which passed through 17 editions. Married, Jan. 11, 1848, Matilda Jane, 2nd dau. of Edward Grove, of Shenstone Park, Staffordshire , and had issue. Led a roving life; described as 'generous, high-spirited and unselfish, with the Irish love of adventure.' Author, The Memoirs of Prince Rupert and the Cavaliers; Memoirs of Horace Walpole and his Contemporaries; Darien, or the Merchant Prince, etc. Having been deputed by the Atlantic and Pacific Junction Company to arrange a friendly understanding with the Indians on the Isthmus of Darien, sailed from Southampton on board the Amazon, Jan. 2, and perished, when the ship caught fire, Jan. 4, 1852.
