Medical Officer and naturalist to the British expedition to Ruwenzori, Central Africa , 1905-7; and with that to Dutch New Guinea , 1909-12; and, again, 1912 as leader. Served in the Great War, 1914-19 (Surgeon-Lieut., R.N.; twice mentioned in despatches; D.S.C., 1918). F.R.G.S.; Gill medal, 1914; Patron's gold medal, 1925; Hon. Sec. 1928. Surgeon and naturalist to the first Mount Everest expedition, 1921. Married, 1923, Mary, dau. of Daniel Meinertzhagen, and had issue. Author, From Ruwenzori to the Congo , etc. Shot dead (together with a detective-officer of the Cambridge police) in his College rooms, June 3, 1930, by a pupil, Douglas Newton Potts, who was being interrogated; the assailant then shot himself. Left £500 to King's 'for any purpose connected with the beautification of the place.'
