Carried out a Greek design for Downing College, 1807-11.
Designed Haileybury College for the East India Company, 1806; the Doric entrance to the lower Assembly rooms at Bath, 1808; the bridge of King's College, 1818, and the Hall, Provost's Lodge, Library, and stone screen of the front court, 1822; 'these buildings conceived in a bastard Gothic style, secured for their designer further instructions, happily unfulfilled, to gothicise James Gibbs's classic building on the west side of the court.' Built the New Court of Trinity, and the new buildings at Corpus in the same style.
University College, Gower Street, one of his greatest works, was designed 1827-8; St George's Hospital, 1827-8, and the National Gallery, 1832-8. Professor of Architecture at the Royal Academy, 1837.
Resided for many years at 36, Weymouth Street, London , and latterly in Cambridge.
Married, 1811, Alicia, dau. of Matthew Murphy, of Ravendale, Lincolnshire . Author, Antiquities of Magna Graecia; Atheniensia, or Remarks on the Buildings of Athens; The Civil Architecture of Vitruvius, etc.
Died Aug. 31, 1839, at his residence, Lensfield, Cambridge, on his 61st birthday; buried under the sacrarium of the chapel of Corpus, which he had erected.
Father of the next and of Henry R. (1841); brother of George (1803).
